Magick of Iran: Ritual Performance

“Magick of Iran” brings to life the rich history of Magick, tracing its roots from “magus,” the Latin word for Zoroastrian priests of the Iranian cultural region. This region, encompassing parts of West Asia, the Caucasus, Central Asia, South Asia, and East Asia, was shaped by ancient Iranian empires which interwove their cultural and linguistic elements with local traditions.

This performance reveals how Iranian Magick evolved, particularly after the rise of Islam, as it merged with Greco-Egyptian traditions, including Neoplatonism and the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus. This syncretic form of magick reached Europe during the Crusades, carried by orders such as the Knights Templar, who later contributed to the evolution of Freemasonry.

In the late 19th century, Victorian occultists, influenced by a surge of ethnographic research, reinterpreted these ancient practices, leading to the creation of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. This order integrated various Magickal traditions, including those of Iranian origin, shaping modern Western esotericism.

This Ritual Performance aims to recontextualize the Iranian Magick that impacted the Golden Dawn and its subsequent traditions, such as Thelema. By highlighting its original cultural significance and tracing its development within the Iranian cultural sphere, it seeks to reclaim the essence of Iranian Magick, restoring its true historical and cultural context.
