“Magick Latern Night Vol. I”
April 7, 2023 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
“Magick Latern Night Vol. I”
On this occasion we are pleased to present in “The Fool” two paradigmatic short films from the avant-garde scene and both strongly impregnated with occult references, oneirism, archetypal imagery, borderline surrealism, enigmatic symbolism, and rituality in an approach to the cinematographic medium as a true magical tool.
We will introduce the essential aspects of both films, a short historical contextualization, some relevant biographical data, but above all we will immerse ourselves in the fascinating concatenation of events related to the magic that both films invoked and subsequently unleashed to determinely influence audiovisual culture to this day. .
“Meshes of the Afternoon” (1943) directed by Maya Deren.
“MESHES OF THE AFTERNOON” is one of the most influential works in American experimental cinema. A non-narrative work, it has been identified as a key example of the “trance film,” in which a protagonist appears in a dreamlike state, and where the camera conveys his or her subjective focus”
”The Wormwood Star” (1956) directed by Curtis Harrington.
“A portrait of artist, actress, poet and occultist Marjorie Cameron: an artist. A poet. A muse. A cartographer for the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the war. A member of the propaganda machine. An occultist. An actress. Perhaps the Whore of Babylon.”
We will accompany the night with red wine in honor of Babalon.
The evening will end with a set of underground music from the 60s and 70s related to the occult.
